Nokia's N95 smartphone goes legit
We're still struggling with a spat of fainting fits across the Engadget HQ, but that Nokia N95 pre-release info leak last night wasn't no hearsay. Nokia just dropped their complete fanboy specsheet of a S60 phone in the Nokia N95 today, including a 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, 802.11g WiFi, HSDPA, microSD, 150MB of internal memory and pretty much any other spec you could ever care to have stuffed into your phone by a Finnish "multimedia computer" manufacturer. The 2.6-inch QVGA screen should provide plenty of room to partake in all this specification glory, and there's a full-on 3.5mm audio jack to enjoy your multimedia in a convenient manner. Of course, that 550 euro pricetag ($700 US) wasn't no joke neither, but luckily we have until Q1 '07 -- that's when they're busting this thing out in Europe -- to get all practiced up on our petty thievery. Keep reading for the pr0n.

Nice. You just have to take out a loan to get that :P
rkaussner @ Apr 26th 2007 11:53AM
This is a potentially intriguing gadget in an endless stream of new gadgets (and I do understand this technology convergence/"Swiss Army Knife-like" thing), however I still much prefer my dedicated cameras, knives, etc. to many of the multi-function devices out there these days. My Canon SLR digital cameras will still blow any camera phone way out of the water in terms of performance and quality results. Maxwell Smart's "Shoephone" was funny and somewhat interesting on the old television show, "Get Smart", but his other shoe which didn't have a phone in it worked much better as a shoe, and his dedicated phone worked much better as a phone than did the shoephone. As far as I see it, this "everything in a single device philosophy phenomenon is more about keeping the masses addicted to new stuff, than it is about practicality.

holy crap that thing looks awesome! i need a replacement for my p910, but i think i want something with a QWERTY keyboard. the flip on my p910 broke and i hate not having the keyboard anymore (no matter how tiny it was).
Still, GPS, 5MP camera, wifi and that decent sized screen are pretty nice...even if it doesn't run WinMo.
Andy @ Sep 26th 2006 11:05AM
is that camera on the front the 5mp one or is that an additional one. if that's the only camera, that's poor placement. :-(
Joonas @ Sep 26th 2006 11:30AM
@ Andy
The camera on the front is probably a VGA camera for video calls; the real camera is on the back. That's how it works on the current models also (my N73, for instance).
Jacob Kennedy @ Sep 26th 2006 3:15PM
The spec sheet specifically lists two cameras. The 5 megapixel and a 'front camera' which has a much lower resolution.

James @ Sep 26th 2006 11:10AM
Why only a QVGA screen? My N80 has a higher resolution than that, even if the physical dimensions are smaller.
Bjarke @ Sep 26th 2006 11:29AM
Yeah, too bad about the QVGA, but thats just nokia's new standard resolution.
James @ Sep 26th 2006 11:10AM
I wonder if the slide will be spring loaded or anything like that. The N80 slide already opens up by itself in my pocket, and a dual slider like the N95 might be even worse.
Esat @ Sep 26th 2006 11:11AM
Holy SHIT!!!! I just got an N73 and am very happy with it. Theres no way I could afford this, but still... HOLY SHIT!!
Dave @ Sep 26th 2006 11:11AM
Ok...well I know where I am going next year for vacation. To Finland! To see the moose and trees and to buy this phone. :)
tpp @ Sep 26th 2006 12:18PM
Dave, don't get Nokia phones from Finland unless you don't care about the price. The phones are cheaper in the US.
I was in Finland this summer and I couldn't understand why a phone produced by a Finnish company costs more there than in the US. The price difference was significant in the higher end models. And not just because of the unfavorable exchange rate. In some cases the price in euros was higher than the price in USD here, e.g. the price tag was 450 euros, compared to something like 399 USD here.
Just make sure you do some comparison shopping before making any buying decisions. It could easily cost you in excess of $100.
Filip @ Sep 27th 2006 1:21AM
The phones are cheaper in Finland than in the US... when looking at the unsubsidised price. In the US, most phones are sold budled with a subscription (in the long run:costs more than buying the phone) where as in Finland you get the buy the phone and choose the operator you wish to use, anytime, anywhere, while keeping your number. That is probably why calling in Finland is around 0,06 €/min where as you are paying hellovalot more in the US, right?
But, now they've started bundeling 3G phones with subscriptions in Finland also, which is good for the operators, bad for the people.
James @ Sep 26th 2006 11:11AM
Uh, and that's a different James with the comment below.
artifex @ Sep 26th 2006 11:12AM
Finally, most of my pocket gadgets, and then some.
If this came out 2 years ago, it'd be touted as a 5MP camera with wi-fi, free phone capabilities and a PDA built in.
This thing is sweet. And it's coming out at the same time as Apple's phone, probably. This is going to be a tough call, so to speak :) But I think I like this mix of features more. And it won't be tied to one vendor, apparently.
JD @ Sep 26th 2006 11:15AM
Hmmm. I'd miss the slideout keyboard from my HTC, but dang, this looks interesting.
Please tell me it has a touch screen.

Oh, you must use Cingular. If you use T-Mobile you will not have any problems.
Garry Weil @ Oct 11th 2006 12:45AM
Band issues, not for me. I would rather take the 4 band GSM local and use the UMTS/2100 for when I travel. With this phone I could have service in Europe, Asia, Japan, and Korea.
Christy @ Dec 29th 2006 12:43PM
Hey, i know nothing about cell phones but I do know that my boyfriend really wants this phone. When does it come out in the US and what do you mean by 'band issues'. Will this end up being a not so great gift?
nicholas @ Sep 26th 2006 11:20AM
Is this thing quad-band? Glad I didn't pick up the N80 yet, or the p990, this thing is a much better mactch for my needs.
Sumsa @ Sep 26th 2006 4:46PM

Tristan @ Sep 26th 2006 12:15PM
Shweet.
So it took all of 3months for me to find the next phone to upgrade to after next year, maybe. Looks good, specs are nice but i'm more than a bit dissapointed with the resolution, and the dual slider thing, i'm dubious about how that'll work. as the mechanism gets loose won't the phone's face slide all over the place?
Any of you seen the n83 specs/pics? Looks a bit more like the advance a lot of us are going to be wanting after using an n80.
Bernhard Snizek @ Sep 26th 2006 11:57AM
Is there VOIP capability included ?
/B
Garrett @ Feb 27th 2007 2:56PM
VOIP is included when the carrier allowes. A Director of corporate strategy as Nokia spoke at Sloan today. Check out my blog for more on their strategy for the N95.

James @ Sep 27th 2006 10:41AM
Actually, the N80 is QVGA as well - there is no point to a screen < 3inches having a higher resolution.
Zuken @ Dec 13th 2006 6:05PM
Sorry but I can't find any shop in the US which has the cheaper price than. Can you show me some?
malcolm @ Jan 10th 2007 2:06AM
well i aint from finland but i do get all or most of my phones from there.you should know by the time these phones get to the states there are nothing but knock offs of the original.they might look the same but i can 100% tell the ones from finland last way longer than the ones you buy at t-mobile.
jeprox @ Feb 10th 2007 10:21AM
I was in Finland too a while back. Euro was under $1 exchange rate then. Finland, and all other Scandinavian countries, have very high taxes, ergo, everything costs more over there. If you have a chance to shop in Asia (except Japan where taxes are high too), that's a ton of places you can get good deals with more favorable exchange rates. It's best if you know someone who's going there.
Batman @ Sep 26th 2006 12:24PM
It's beautiful, too bad only Batman can afford it. Does it come in black?
dan @ Sep 26th 2006 12:28PM
DAMN YOU NOKIA! i just bought a N80 an you come out with this?! i hate you
sixspeed @ Sep 26th 2006 12:50PM
I think I just found a reason to come back to Nokia!
Michael @ Sep 26th 2006 12:43PM
Dan i totally agree.
I got my n80 injuly an its great, bit big tho.
The specs on the are unbelievable and its actually looks good too!
But a QVA screen?
The n80 has 352x416 res and is absoluty beautifull.
Fingers-crossed they will bump up res for release!
Matt @ Sep 26th 2006 12:49PM
Ugh, the lack of Windows Mobile is a deal killer for me.
aj @ Sep 26th 2006 5:37PM
That's sad. Everyone knows Windows Mobile is the biggest pile of horse-doo out there. It's a terribly engineered product, that wastes battery and just doesn't work. What does work is Symbian which Nokia adapt slightly as Series 60 - which is so far in advance of WM that it doesn't bear comparison.
