Nokia's N95 smartphone goes legit
We're still struggling with a spat of fainting fits across the Engadget HQ, but that Nokia N95 pre-release info leak last night wasn't no hearsay. Nokia just dropped their complete fanboy specsheet of a S60 phone in the Nokia N95 today, including a 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, 802.11g WiFi, HSDPA, microSD, 150MB of internal memory and pretty much any other spec you could ever care to have stuffed into your phone by a Finnish "multimedia computer" manufacturer. The 2.6-inch QVGA screen should provide plenty of room to partake in all this specification glory, and there's a full-on 3.5mm audio jack to enjoy your multimedia in a convenient manner. Of course, that 550 euro pricetag ($700 US) wasn't no joke neither, but luckily we have until Q1 '07 -- that's when they're busting this thing out in Europe -- to get all practiced up on our petty thievery. Nice. You just have to take out a loan to get that :P
This is a potentially intriguing gadget in an endless stream of new gadgets (and I do understand this technology convergence/"Swiss Army Knife-like" thing), however I still much prefer my dedicated cameras, knives, etc. to many of the multi-function devices out there these days. My Canon SLR digital cameras will still blow any camera phone way out of the water in terms of performance and quality results. Maxwell Smart's "Shoephone" was funny and somewhat interesting on the old television show, "Get Smart", but his other shoe which didn't have a phone in it worked much better as a shoe, and his dedicated phone worked much better as a phone than did the shoephone. As far as I see it, this "everything in a single device philosophy phenomenon is more about keeping the masses addicted to new stuff, than it is about practicality.

holy crap that thing looks awesome! i need a replacement for my p910, but i think i want something with a QWERTY keyboard. the flip on my p910 broke and i hate not having the keyboard anymore (no matter how tiny it was).
Still, GPS, 5MP camera, wifi and that decent sized screen are pretty nice...even if it doesn't run WinMo.
is that camera on the front the 5mp one or is that an additional one. if that's the only camera, that's poor placement. :-(
@ Andy
The camera on the front is probably a VGA camera for video calls; the real camera is on the back. That's how it works on the current models also (my N73, for instance).
The spec sheet specifically lists two cameras. The 5 megapixel and a 'front camera' which has a much lower resolution.
hei,wads different N83 with N95?
I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!
I want one too.....Who ever wants to sale this baby email me please..
altay1@earthlink.net
Why only a QVGA screen? My N80 has a higher resolution than that, even if the physical dimensions are smaller.
Yeah, too bad about the QVGA, but thats just nokia's new standard resolution.
I wonder if the slide will be spring loaded or anything like that. The N80 slide already opens up by itself in my pocket, and a dual slider like the N95 might be even worse.
Holy SHIT!!!! I just got an N73 and am very happy with it. Theres no way I could afford this, but still... HOLY SHIT!!
Ok...well I know where I am going next year for vacation. To Finland! To see the moose and trees and to buy this phone. :)
Dave, don't get Nokia phones from Finland unless you don't care about the price. The phones are cheaper in the US.
I was in Finland this summer and I couldn't understand why a phone produced by a Finnish company costs more there than in the US. The price difference was significant in the higher end models. And not just because of the unfavorable exchange rate. In some cases the price in euros was higher than the price in USD here, e.g. the price tag was 450 euros, compared to something like 399 USD here.
Just make sure you do some comparison shopping before making any buying decisions. It could easily cost you in excess of $100.
The phones are cheaper in Finland than in the US... when looking at the unsubsidised price. In the US, most phones are sold budled with a subscription (in the long run:costs more than buying the phone) where as in Finland you get the buy the phone and choose the operator you wish to use, anytime, anywhere, while keeping your number. That is probably why calling in Finland is around 0,06 €/min where as you are paying hellovalot more in the US, right?
But, now they've started bundeling 3G phones with subscriptions in Finland also, which is good for the operators, bad for the people.
Uh, and that's a different James with the comment below.
Finally, most of my pocket gadgets, and then some.
If this came out 2 years ago, it'd be touted as a 5MP camera with wi-fi, free phone capabilities and a PDA built in.
This thing is sweet. And it's coming out at the same time as Apple's phone, probably. This is going to be a tough call, so to speak :) But I think I like this mix of features more. And it won't be tied to one vendor, apparently.
Hmmm. I'd miss the slideout keyboard from my HTC, but dang, this looks interesting.
Please tell me it has a touch screen.
specs page on nokia's site:
http://www.nseries.com/nseries/v2/media/product/tech_specs/en-US/tech_specs_n95_en_US.html?lang=en&country=US
as expected, US band issues:
> (EDGE/GSM 900/1800/1900 + WCDMA 2100 MHz networks)
Oh, you must use Cingular. If you use T-Mobile you will not have any problems.
Band issues, not for me. I would rather take the 4 band GSM local and use the UMTS/2100 for when I travel. With this phone I could have service in Europe, Asia, Japan, and Korea.
Hey, i know nothing about cell phones but I do know that my boyfriend really wants this phone. When does it come out in the US and what do you mean by 'band issues'. Will this end up being a not so great gift?
Is this thing quad-band? Glad I didn't pick up the N80 yet, or the p990, this thing is a much better mactch for my needs.
Head on to
http://www.nokia.com/press
Today they also released the N75 and the "Nokia Music Range" all existing NSeries phones, but painted black. Sexy as hell.
Especially photo no. 12 on this page:

Shweet.
So it took all of 3months for me to find the next phone to upgrade to after next year, maybe. Looks good, specs are nice but i'm more than a bit dissapointed with the resolution, and the dual slider thing, i'm dubious about how that'll work. as the mechanism gets loose won't the phone's face slide all over the place?
Any of you seen the n83 specs/pics? Looks a bit more like the advance a lot of us are going to be wanting after using an n80.
Is there VOIP capability included ?
/B
VOIP is included when the carrier allowes. A Director of corporate strategy as Nokia spoke at Sloan today. Check out my blog for more on their strategy for the N95.
www.gdodge.blogspot.com
front camera is CIF
Actually, the N80 is QVGA as well - there is no point to a screen < 3inches having a higher resolution.
Sorry but I can't find any shop in the US which has the cheaper price than. Can you show me some?
well i aint from finland but i do get all or most of my phones from there.you should know by the time these phones get to the states there are nothing but knock offs of the original.they might look the same but i can 100% tell the ones from finland last way longer than the ones you buy at t-mobile.
I was in Finland too a while back. Euro was under $1 exchange rate then. Finland, and all other Scandinavian countries, have very high taxes, ergo, everything costs more over there. If you have a chance to shop in Asia (except Japan where taxes are high too), that's a ton of places you can get good deals with more favorable exchange rates. It's best if you know someone who's going there.
It's beautiful, too bad only Batman can afford it. Does it come in black?
DAMN YOU NOKIA! i just bought a N80 an you come out with this?! i hate you
I think I just found a reason to come back to Nokia!
Dan i totally agree.
I got my n80 injuly an its great, bit big tho.
The specs on the are unbelievable and its actually looks good too!
But a QVA screen?
The n80 has 352x416 res and is absoluty beautifull.
Fingers-crossed they will bump up res for release!
Ugh, the lack of Windows Mobile is a deal killer for me.
That's sad. Everyone knows Windows Mobile is the biggest pile of horse-doo out there. It's a terribly engineered product, that wastes battery and just doesn't work. What does work is Symbian which Nokia adapt slightly as Series 60 - which is so far in advance of WM that it doesn't bear comparison.
BTW anyone know when this marvel of technogly is coming out?
This phone fascinates me... I must sleep with it.
If you look at it as 1. your phone $300 2. your ipod $300 and 3. your camera $300 it looks like a prity good deal. Also there wont be as much to dable with when you unload your pockets.
Oh Emm Gee. That's a hot phone. No matter what, i'm getting it.
Oh. My. GOD!! GIVE IT TO ME!!
MySpace: www.myspace.com/itsallverbatim
Ooh yeah! Come to mommy... I've had my eye on this ever since it was called the N83 - ironically, ever since I picked up my N80 :)
This looks like a killer phone.
However, 4 things that slightly bother me about it.
1. Slide might suffer wear & tear. (just a possibility.)
2. No Windows Mobile. (probably can live without)
3. No QWERTY keyboard.
4. No VGA. (can live without.)
If this phone didn't suffer from slide failure and had #2 - 4 added, then that would be the most perfect phone EVER. (Oh yeah is this thing touchscreen? If not, then that too.)
haha... it should be called the N80 Pro!! love my n80!!
Now, if only it had Windows Mobile 5.0 and a Qwerty keyboard. :-) Oooh, and maybe a flash on the cam....
I have to agree after recently switching from WinMo to S60. S60 is just so much more stable and fits my needs for 'phone first, PDA second' performance.
I also agree that the screen rez is a let-down. My E70 has the same rez as the N80, and I love playing the 'find me a pixel' game with people who have never seen such a hi-rez screen.
I can certainly live without Windows Mobile. WM Smartphone edition doesn't provide anything that S60 doesn't, plus S60 gives you decent Mac syncing and USB mass storage mode straight out of the box.
This is still a proto right?
Maybe if we send a whole mess of e mails to nokia demanding the screen res be increased we have a shot.
Whose with me!!!!
But the res not too bad like, same as ipod so more that exceptable but i would miss the initial gasp you get with ppl over screen res.
Well not like GASP!!! but theres definatly a wow...
Yea.... Yea....
Oh yea, the e mail thing.
Yea lets e mail them.
I agree with the other guy.... "Holy S@!T" !!!!!! oMfG!!! I got the n80 in July, and am super happy with it, but realize that there are a few places nokia could have elaborated on at least a tad... THIS TAKES CARE OF ALL OF IT.. I realize the screen isn't quite as spectacular, but GVGA is hardly what i'd call slacking. I would sell my soul to get this damned thing. It is the ULTIMATE of all phones. Every bad A$$ phone is always missing something of some sort - either no A2DP, or no dedicated keys, or bad camera (like no autofocus??), no edge or something... anything... but this phone OVERLOOKS NOTHING!!!SIGN ME UP!!!
has it got a touch screen?
nope
the music interface looks a little unorganised dont you think?
It has S60 UI/operating system..and that does not yet have support for touch screen. But why are people pining after it? I've used P800 and some other gadgets with stylus and touch screen. Very cumbersome when the screen is still this small and always requires two hands. With S60 averything can be done with one hand.
There is support for a separate bluetooth keyboard for anyone wanting to use a qwerty.
I don't care what that spec sheet says, do you really think that this phone -the successor to the N80- would have a lower screen resolution than the one it is replacing? There's absolutely no way Nokia would do that, this will have at least the same as, or better, resolution than the N80.
Plus, why does everyone bang on about the price? Since when has anyone paid for a mobile... everyone gets them for free on contract surely?
> why does everyone bang on about the price? Since when has anyone paid for
> a mobile... everyone gets them for free on contract surely?
Bernard, perhaps it's escaped your notice that you still have to pay for the phone on contract: If this is a £400 phone, you can reckon on it costing you £40 per month if you want to get it for FREE. Oh look, £40 over 12 months is £480. So you've paid MORE for the phone than you would have if you'd got it off contract. There's no such thing as a free lunch. You either pay for it in one go, or pay for it over 12 months - the choice is simply your preference. For light users, it's usually best to just buy the phone outright and use a PAYG sim.
Um, sorry. N80 is more than QVGA. Sigh.
NOKIA - please add one feature till you release this monster - add gps data to the photo (metadata) - would
be cool to know where you took the pictures. And give
us this baby in black(matte)
P L E A S E :-)
P.S.: please give me a reservation for mine :-)
Ok so there's a nice new Nseries out, based on Nokias S60 3rd edition. Great. And it's got GPS built in. Wondeful. But i'm seeing a screenshot of a navigation software in the engadget post, and yet no 'decent' gps software has come out for the n91... Is the software to generate routes from gps data native to the phone or am i missing something?!
Will I be able to use the GPS on the phone with Streets and Trips on my laptop? Being used to a 15.4" map makes using a 2.6" map a pain in the ass.
Very nice, when will it come to India & at what price.
pretty cool gaget!!! does it hang like the other N series like n71,n90,n91,n92,n93...etc..
does it hang like the other N series? like N71,N90,N91,N93....3250..ect?
Does anybody know what GPS chipset that thingie uses?
*Let it be sirfIII pleeeze*
holy shit i want to know who did invented it batman
i am thinking of getting it man just have to sell the ipod playstation car but wanna get it man too hot to handle just worried about the mechanisim
I agree with the poster who said we ought to get Nokia to improve the screen resolution before release - I mean they read these comments right? And I'm sure they value them.
I'd like a qwerty too, but you can't staple a big chunk like that onto this cool little toy.
Other posters, let's all get together on this - don't get us wrong, it's a tight little package Nokia! Totally awsome, top boss. But please, add the extra screen resolution.
oh, that is very fantastic! A phone that carries everything i need, that is very amazing. I never tried any N series phone but i think this one would be the best. The problem is that i cannot afford this. If anyone can give me this phone for free then that will be great. If ever someone there who has the extra money please do buy me one. e-mail me at: frennybal@yahoo.com
